Broken Sword

This is a nice adventure game! It's got a nice story (templars are never wrong for game plots it seems :-), good music, good puzzles and good voice acting (mostly). The graphics are really nice too, especially for a game this old. Our hero, George Stobbart, looks a bit boring/stupid to me however.

So, now I'll cut right to the parts I dislike and risk sounding like I really hate the whole thing :-) ... First off, I don't like death situations, sudden or not. No, nope, no-no. Even if they fit within the storyline, and they do, they don't belong in a good adventure (unless possibly in situations where you actively look for them). One of them comes right after a pretty long conversation just to make things even better. The thing is you can't save during conversations, so you have to go through it each time to get to the point where you try to avoid being killed (thank someone influental for the possibility to skip lines of dialogue quickly!) ...

This is a more minor issue, anohter one that kind of annoys me though. It's those moments where you were cut out of the action, and only get to hear about it when George is telling Nico about it. Disturbs the flow.

Oh, and here's a big one: the last-puzzle-but-one. It works well as an in-joke about adventure gameplay in general, but the whole thing ruins the mood and story for me (how come nobody else got in earlier, especially during that period of being a storage? Especially when the storage was actually below that silly door puzzle ...) In general, the end felt like a bit of a letdown in parts. Other parts of it were good though, like the overall flow of the conclusion.

Hmmm, here's another definitely bad thing: uninstalling the game simply cleans out the folder in which it was installed. Yep, that includes your hard-earned savegames ...

Some magazine said the brits finally caught up on american adventure games with this one. I think Revolution did better with Beneath a Steel Sky in some ways ...
