Ruling Britannia

A beginners guide

The Beginning

For starters, you might as well forget holding on to Edinburgh. Even if no Martian pods land here, they will often come here before you can put up a decent defence. Concentrate on defending Northumberland instead, bring everything you have there and start building defences there and in Lake District. The thing about Northumberland is that the Martians will build their base on the island if the get the chance, and you'll have a hard time taking the sector back if that happens.

What to Build?

You probably won't need any more Sappers than you start with, but another Construction Vehicle or two always come in handy. Main priority is Armoured Lorries and, once you've researched them, Track Layers. This means you should make sure each Vehicle Factory gets a Training Centre sooner or later. Repair Workshops should be built in Northumberland and some other border sector to patch your forces up after engagements.

I've never seen the need for Submersiles or aircraft, you're not supposed to drag the game out long enough to have time to research these. Self Propelled guns are great little toys if you have time to research them and build the required Munitions Factories.

When building defences, remember which adjacent sectors are in enemy hands (or tentacles), as attacks will only come from those directions. Martians will often walk straight through barbed wire if they are attacked by cannons behind it.

The Wonders of Naval Warfare

Make sure your shipyards are always cranking out those little babies called Ironclads, they can do wondres with any seaside Martian base. When attacking incoming Martian vehicles, you should use force fire to make them aim in front of the enemies. Otherwise, the shots will usually land behind their target. I like to send groups of Ironclads to terrorize Martian coast sectors. Even if they can't reach the Comms. Centre, which they often can, they'll blow any Martian vehicle to dust in no time at all. Watch out if you do combined land and sea strikes though, you don't want to hit your own units!

In the Warzone

One good rule for all RTS games goes here too: concentrate fire!. have all your units firing at the same target, and that target won't last for long. Better destroying one enemy than damaging two. Move your units in one or possibly two, if you have a very large force, groups, and concentrate fire!

Remember, taking out a Comms. Centre makes all other buildings self-destruct. This includes defensive weapons and barriers ...

Don't ever attempt to cross a bridge if there is a Martian in sight, it seems units can´t fire while crossing bridges ... Keep your units away from all kind of barriers! They're not smart enough to do it themselves, and will gladly kill themselves trying to get a shot at the enemy.

Grampian Mountains

What you want here are Self Propelled Guns, as many as possible. They will make taking this sector a lot easier. If you don't have them, you may well have to do two or three attacks to finish the sector, the Martians are well fortified and have the geography on their side.
