The Abyss

Strange film this ... Pretty good too, and really worked on your fear of drowning. And cool setting of course, bit of an Alien-feeling to those corridors. And bit of space feeling to some scenes of course. Very working sense of wonder to the "stranger" elements of it, made me think of something by Arthur C. Clarke toward the end ...

That feeling that there may be a bit more to it than you notice is present, at least toward the end of the film. The sense of mystery is preserved, and luckily there isn't a sequel to ruin things either. Been told there's a director's cut version with an extended end to it, but from what I've heard it doesn't sound too important. Still, I would of course like to see a version with those bits too, always want as much as possible of a story. I get the feeling this film is a bit odd, like really being one person's idea coming alive and not being too manipulated by other "forces", and I like that about it. Feels like the film really is what Cameron wanted it to be for as far as the film goes. Then, there is the possibility/feeling that he may have wanted to tell even more of the story, but that's something not bothering me as much. Got to find out more about it, have heard bits some time ago about the filming and so that I want to refresh. Seem to recall it wasn't exactly a trouble free production ... But the thought that they actually built a huge underwater set, had everyone take diver's certificates and so on somehow appeals to me ...

Oh, and nice early computer rendered effects, always like seeing ILM in action ... Think I saw a pretty obvious seam between the real world and the rendered one in one placde though, things have evolved ...
