24/6Thought I enjoyed reading Robert Jordan. Then, today, the next book in the Wheel of Time wasn't available at the library. So, I borrowed the one after that and, just to make sure it wouldn't go anywhere, decided to wait for the missing one to come in. Then I sat down with Jingo, one of the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett, and realized I might just get along without mr Jordan for a while. "Ha ha, funny", to put it short. You sit down with a book of Pratchett's and you won't even notice if you are sitting in an uncomfortable position until some hundred pages has passed. People on the Discworld don't walk around with the burden of an unavoidable prophecy on their shoulders. And even if they would, which they wouldn't, they would make it a lot funnier. Don't get me wrong, I like Jordan's books too, they're in different divisions. The Discworld isn't really about fantasy, it's a mirror of the real world with some big axes and trolls thrown in and then observed from a safe distance by one of the most entertaining writers you'll ever find. While Jordan will never make you laugh out loud, not that it's his goal but anyway, the Discworld makes the day a bit brighter even in very moderate doses. Not sure who wins in number of pages, but Pratchett does at least have more than one story to tell you ... | ||
