Got a full version (except multiplayer) of Descent: Freespace with a paper I bought a week ago, and I still haven't got into it properly, even though I like the style of the game. And I call myself a gamer? Perhaps it has something to do with the lack of navpoints and a map, I don't like that, makes things feel out of control in some way ... Really should give it a few more chances though, now that I've got it working and the joystick properly configured (the first wasn't easy, why do the FAQs never mention the problem you have?).
Helped recovering a friend's computer today. It gave up when he tried to update his V3 3000 drivers, it felt a heap of essential files had been damaged and refused to boot anything but a crippled DOS mode (couldn't even edit things, ick!). Eventually, we managed to run one of those recovery programs resetting the computer to the out-of-the-box-state. Saved us from doing a complete reinstall of Windows, and from trying to awake the CD-ROM to do that, but I don't like the recovery solution. The idea of losing everything on the drive just to get windows going again ... Not my idea of a good time! Should have tried getting a boot disk from home or something I guess, but they though the recovery idea was acceptable. Sure was a lot faster than a reinstall ...
By the way, if you build your computer yourself, buying parts and so on, how do you go about installing Windows (or other OS of your choice)? I mean, you can't just pop in the CD and go, can you? Thought so, so what then? Can you boot DOS from a disk and go on from there? Guess so, can't think of another way to do it. Or is there a way to install Windows right away? Got to ask Martin or someone about that ...
