Food

Good food is, well ... good. I'm definitely not a health freak, I prefer standard cola before diet cola, and many things taste better with some cream added. Cooking is fun, but not when you're hungry and all out of ideas.

So, what food is good? Gee, that's a tough one ... Most things can be very edible indeed, if only they are cooked the right way. Let's make some categories ...

Hamburgers and other fast food

Let's settle this once and for all; Burger King is better than McDonalds. Better burgers and, above all, much better fries. Better ketchup too, come to think of it. Preferably with lots of pepper in it. McDonalds can be nice as a variation though.

My own very-extra-special-super-extravaganza hamburgers aren't too bad either. Large burger, large bread, cheese, fried onions, tomatoes, ketchup, dressing, pickles and lettuce. Served in groups of two without anything else (well, maybe something to drink ...). Very nice, very filling, and at only a fraction of the cost of a Whopper meal ...

Actually, most kinds of fast food finds its way down if the opportunity appears. A pizza every now and then can't hurt, can it?

Other meat-like things

When it comes to really simple things, Falukorv with spaghetti is one of the all-time favourites. Falukorv is a really big sausage made from both pork and beef. Slice and fry the sausage and cook the spaghetti. Add ketchup at pleasure. Even better is Falukorv with fried potatoes, spiced up with dill and served with a fried egg. Another really simple-but-sweet stomach-filler is scrambled eggs on toast with meatballs. Moving up a bit on the pricing scale, fillet of pork is great in all shapes I've encountered. Different pasta sauces are also nice and not too hard to put together. Any leftovers can be put on sandwiches too, a discovery I made this morning.

Vegetarians have less fun ;-) ...

Fish

Salmon on bed of salt with pressed potatoes and this great sauce ... Yummy ... Cod cooked in the oven in foil can be varied into eternity, and it's really simple too. Even I can do it ...

Sandwiches

Tomato sandwiches with butter, ham, cheese white pepper (and tomatoes) between two slices of white bread is great. White bread is nice for sandwiches with lots of stuff on them. Otherwise, I tend to prefer darker bread and crispbread for more "normal" sandwiches. Crispbread with caviar is very nice at those times when you feel like you've never eaten anything but sugar.

Vegetables, desserts and stuff

Garlic is one of the better spices, it adds to the taste of most food. Tabasco and other really strong stuff I can get by without. Pizza salad is, so far, the only shape in which I'm guaranteed to happily eat large quantities of white cabbage, it needs to be prepared in some way before it gets really good. But then, most types of salad improves with some kind of dressing. When it comes to single vegetables they can often be eaten "as is" with very good results.

When it comes to stuff with lots of sugar and fat in them, like desserts and cookies, there are a few worth mentioning. Cookies with a lot of chocolate tend to disappear pretty fast, as do many types of cake. Ice cream with home made chocolate sauce in vast quantities is also a winner, as is the traditional-but-often-massive Swedish semla (I'll try and fix a picture of and page for that soon to make things clear for all you unfortunate non-swedes ...).

Drink

For breakfast, tea, and why not lots of it while you're at it, is the thing to drink. A cup of coffee is drunk once every now and then, when no-one is looking. I try and drink quite a lot of water since it's good for you, and that results in a few extra toilet-visits during the afternoons ... A glass of wine is good for diner, but otherwise I don't consume much alcohol. I don't feel the need to drink just to get drunk beyond all sense (unlike most other people around here at my age ...) so I don't.

"Hey, I'm hungry! When do we eat?"
