I'm starting to feel more at home in Linux nowadays, even though in the last few days I've created a lot more problems for myself than I've solved :-) ... It all started with the idea that it's about time I give my Linux some more space. The leftover partition (created four when I got it, and am still only using three) on my 60 gig HD was formatted for the task and I was ready to start mounting. Only thing is I can't yet figure out how I should do it. Messing around with fstab has so far brought nothing but trouble (and real trouble, I tell you!), recovered from the last and worst of it yesterday and I won't start over until I have a little more of an idea of what I should do. Not only would I like to move precisely everything over, it's currently dished out between multiple partitions right now. So, I'm a bit stuck, but I haven't given up! Managing to recover from those mistakes has increased my Linux confidence a good deal, and succesfully updating and uninstalling (even if it's through a nice and simple interface and not by hand) a lot of files has helped too. Maybe I should find a good message board to ask questions on ...

Less than a week into Linux usage, and the /usr partition was already proving to be hopelessly underdimensioned. Fixed that now by giving /usr/lib a partition of its own (why I don't resize partitons instead of creating new ones is kind of involved to explain here :-). Guess I did it the most risky way possible, renaming, mounting and moving the folders in GNOME. Not to mention dropping the whole thing in the wrong place once and having to search around a bit for it. Good thing I didn't restart or something :-) ... Think I'm going to celebrate with some sleep, it's becoming too late once again ...

Another Linux milestone passed: finished my first penguin yesterday! Not sure it's legal to become this fond of something you've drawn yourself, but it seems to have happened nevertheless :-) ... Evidence on the penguin page.

On the to-do list right now:

  • Figure out how to get somewhat higher resolutions work in somewhat higher refresh rates. 1024*768 is a little too small when you want both a decent sized browser and an instant messenger open at once ... I think updating to the latest video drivers (something that seems to have worked flawlessly otherwise) has something to do with it. Needs more investigation.
  • Fix some nice and personal desktops! I want something suitable for the root login, like a big eye or SHODAN (or a penguin of course), possibly with some nice text message too. "The Penguin is watching" or something ... And something nice and friendly, with a pig or a penguin, for my "normal" login of course.
  • Learn a lot more! GIMP for example, to produce the above desktops, would be nice. Much better skills in everything else too. Quite a large point this :-) ...

The desktops are now in place, and sweet they are too ... Nothing says they won't be changed, but what I've been thinking about is actually there now. My normal login desktop is my own penguin sitting on a background toning from blue to white. The root desktop, on the other hand, features a really nice version of SHODAN that I found following the link above. Look under "media databank", then "themes". Scroll down to "wallpapers" and find "Digital SHODAN" there. I totally agree with the comment. My only possible objection is that it isn't a desktop of my own creation. That always feels the nicest ...

Nevermind, this one's just soo cool!
