More Notes on the Palm ...

26/11 2001

Very slight disasters struck this weekend. Because of a silly accident all contents of the Palm were erased some time on Saturday. I wasn't too happy about it of course, especially since I wasn't sure exactly when I last synced. Into the cradle it went, and the sync started. App after app was updated from the computer. Then, panic struck: crash when it reached the datebook files! And it continued to do so until I finally got the idea of going into hotsync preferences and turning off datebook sync. To my relief I now got all other files back, only with the quite major bother of having to re-create all categories and sort things in under them (something I realize I might have been able to avoid if I'd changed some sync preferences (let the desktop overwrite) before the first attempt. I'll do it next time, if there is one (which there hopefully isn't ...)). Some searching on a certain worldwide computer network revealed that the datebook backup can get corrupted sometimes. Also, there are ways to repair these errors. However, these ways cost money, and I didn't feel it was worth 70 crowns to get back old appointments (especially not now, when Niclas has informed me that he can still get to his file through the Palm Desktop).

In the end, it was no big disaster, just a slight nerve-wrecker :-) ... Could have been worse though, if I hadn't been writing my latest notes on the Rex. This'll probably increase my sync frequency a bit again, especially since I've increased my noting using portables a bit since I got the Rex.

I'd like to use my Palm for even more cool things! The two dominating ideas are usage as storage space and as a remote.

The first idea has some practical problems of course, since far from every computer has an interface to connect a Palm with. But maybe this could be worked around somehow. It sure is more than once that I've been in front of some school computer and wished that I had brought a floppy to bring some little file home. Just connecting the Palm and storing the file there would be a perfect solution, the Palm is always with me and a lot more secure than an old disk as well.

Use as a remote shouldn't be as hard to fix (haven't done any research, maybe there's software for it already ...). I know there's some program to use a Palm to deactivate Furbees, but that's a little limited. Using it for the TV and stereo (and of course computer, lights, oven and microwave would be nice too :-) shouldn't be too hard to fix ... Think I should do that little research now ...

Yes! There are apps for this! I knew it wouldn't be difficult :-) ...
