5/3
My trainee-week ended today. Eight to five for five days, some days a bit more, I'll sure sleep well tonight ... It's been some very nice nine hours a day however, it's a pity it isn't another week. For starters, the house itself was very nice (and it will be even nicer with my suggested addition, read on ...); open, bright and packed with nice stuff. I can't help feeling comfortable surrounded by computers, books and cool-looking building-plans ... And everyone there was really nice too, and there were lots of entertaining conversations going on most of the time. Bure deserves a special thank you. He is also a trainee at the firm, but on a higher level, he's almost a finished architect, so he does real work instead of taking up other people's time :-) ... Anyway, he helped me a lot with the stuff I did and had the ability to talk about really silly or strange ideas in a totally serious manner. That's something I'd like to be able to do. What I'm trying to say here is; thanks Bure, you're a great guy!
The stuff itself was three different, but in a way related, tasks. My first task (when I broke that folding ruler) was to measure the firm's lunch-room and try and turn that space into an apartment. They give all their trainees that task, and they say, with a big grin, that it's good because it's almost impossible to make a good apartment of that room. It sure was tight, but finally I got everything you need in there.
My second task was to plan a summer-cottage of about 60 m2. When I was just done with that plan, Bure discovered that it seemed possible to fit the shape of the lunch-room/apartment to one side of the cottage. We tried it, made it fit and ended up with a long and relatively narrow space which needed some filling. First, we thought about a swimming pool or some kind of relaxing area. Then, one of us, probably Bure, came up with the idea of a bowling alley. Finally, Bure thought I should place it all where the original lunch-room was, as an addition to the current house. Suddenly, I was changing plans of the house to include an eighteen metre extension out on one side, on the second floor ... It looks a bit ... unique, but it was great fun doing it. Yous should see my different ideas for a support for the extension, they're a story of their own. Had to stay an extra fourty five minutes today to finish it. Probably the first trainee at my level who has had to work overtime to finish their trainee-week ...
The bicycle ride home resembled my first ride to the firm, but with more snow and less rain. It wasn't really raining, but there was this kind of light, wet fog in the air which soaked you nevertheless. I also managed to skid with the bike, soaking the left leg of my trousers completely. It feels like some kind of irony; the last day going that way, the snow which caused all the trouble was melting away, and the trousers had just been washed ... Whoever is in charge of Existence does have a sense of humour ...
Remains to be seen if I've become a caffeine-addict, after all I've had tea three times a day on the same times for a week. At least there isn't as much caffeine in tea as in coffee ...
